Thanksgiving - Thanks Living

We are very quickly moving into the holiday season. It will soon be time to gather around tables covered with delicious foods and friends and family seated with us. Unfortunately, in my 77 years I have not seen our country and culture so dramatically divided. Anger, rancor, and passionate arguments fill the airways and publications. Perhaps that same passion is permeating your home and family. But this is not the time for that kind of display.

We who are followers of Christ have an opportunity to share with those closest to us that God is in control of everything! He has put the leaders of our government in place. He has orchestrated world events to suit His good pleasure. He has ordered our lives in such a way as to bring us to a point where we give Him the glory.

It is not always to our liking. In fact, it can be frustrating and painful. We do have the promise, however, “all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to his purpose.” - Romans 8:28. You will notice that this is not a universal promise – it is directed only to believers. But what a wonderful promise to share with those around you during this season. You see, if we can share the gospel of Christ, some may receive the gift that salvation brings.

Yes, indeed, these are troubling times. However, there is another promise from Scripture that warrants our attention – it is found in 2 Timothy 1:7 – “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” You see, we don’t have to be fearful or discouraged because we know that God is in charge – HALLELUJAH! That same Spirit gives us power and love. Power to share the gospel of Jesus Christ this season and the love for those with whom we share it.

So when you gather together with friends and family this year, embrace them with love and affection and share the wonder that is the mystery of Jesus.
